From faded to flawless,
a walnut kitchen reimagined
Interior Design: Stephanie Hutchinson Interiors
We were approached by Stephanie Hutchinson Interiors to work on a large walnut kitchen as part of one of her interior design projects. The space already had incredible bones — beautifully made cabinetry, rich walnut timber, and a timeless design — but over time, the finish had dulled and the natural warmth of the wood had faded. Our task was to restore the kitchen to its former glory and bring the walnut’s depth and richness back to life.
Building Depth & Character
With the surfaces prepared, we began building up the walnut tones layer by layer. This process involves carefully blending shades to enhance the natural depth of the wood, creating a finish that feels rich, warm, and full of life. It’s a true craft — balancing precision and artistry to achieve a tone that looks both timeless and contemporary.
Preparing the Surface
The first step in the process was to remove the original acid-catalyst finish. We carefully stripped this away using a chemical solution, allowing us to reach the natural walnut beneath and create a clean, even foundation for the refinishing work. Once stripped, every surface was hand-sanded — a meticulous process that allows our polishers to feel the texture and grain of the timber, ensuring a smooth and consistent base for colour application.
The Finishing Touch
To complete the restoration, we applied a clear lacquer in a 25% sheen. This subtle finish adds just the right amount of depth and reflection while maintaining the tactile, organic feel of the walnut. It also offers durability and protection, making the finish as practical as it is beautiful.
The result is a kitchen that feels refreshed, luxurious, and full of warmth — perfectly complementing Stephanie’s refined interior design. What was once a tired surface is now a standout feature again, bringing natural beauty and craftsmanship back into the heart of the home.
